Help Needed For Kawelu

A team of 10 people are headed over to Kawelu to lend a hand in the fund raiser, and to work with the children, (especially those with ringworm,), and to work on empowering the community by helping them to understand the importance of becoming self-reliant.

One of our main goals for Kawelu is helping them to purchase a green house.  We have been able to raise about $1000.  The cheapest green house is $5000.  That is made out of wood.  We would like to purchase one with a metal frame because it will last longer.  That one costs about $7000. 

Having a green house at the school is vital because they will be able to grow crops year round, and now that they have a bore hole, they can use drip irrigation so the plants have access to water. 

This green house will not only supply food for the students, but it will also become a source of income for the school.  The students will learn about new techniques in agriculture first hand as they work in the green house.

Changes at Kawelu

A lot has happened at Kawelu since we started working on this project.  The Kawelu community has been able to accomplish quite a bit with our donations and money raised from the 1st Harambee ( Fund Raising) that we did over there in 2010.  Take a look at this before and after picture:

All of the floors have been cemented and all of the walls insided have been plastered.  The walls are safe now and not ready to fall over.  Now that the floors have been cemented, the students are not breathing in so much dirt.

The big change that has taken place is the new borehole that has been sunk at Kawelu.  They now have water for agricultural projects:

Ring Worm at Kawelu

Ring worm is something that we have all probably had at some point in our lives.  It is easily treated, but sometimes choices like buying food or buying medicine compete for resources.  For us, we just go to the pharmacy and buy some anti-fungal cream and put it on for a week or so, and it is gone.  This is often not the case for people in the Kawelu community.  There are currently 45 students at Kawelu that have varying degrees of ringworm.  These are pictures of some students at Kawelu:

No child should have to suffer like this from ring worm.  This is one of the things that we are going to take care of when we go back to Kenya.  For $10 for each child, we can get rid of this.
